English Studies at City College

Isaacs Fellows follow CCNY’s regular curriculum, ranging from “Introduction to Literary Study,” through “Representative Writers” and “Special Topics” courses to upper division seminars. Seminars allow for comprehensive treatment of a particular topic in a more intimate classroom; in some cases, Isaacs Fellows many register in Masters Level seminars as well.

English Department Faculty includes distinguished scholars and writers in a wide range of fields, including the Medieval and Early Modern periods, the Eighteenth Century, Romanticism, Victorian Literature, Modernism, Contemporary Literature, African American Literature, Caribbean Studies, Gender Studies, Literary Theory, and Creative Writing.

The literature concentration in English is a versatile degree. Though the program gives preference to students who are gearing towards an academic career, some Isaacs Scholars have pursued careers in teaching, publishing, business and the law. Our graduates have continued on to doctoral studies in English or Comparative Literature at such institutions as Duke, Princeton, Penn, Cornell, The CUNY Graduate Center and Oxford University.
